Singapore 1000: ‘Highest Industry Turnover
Growth’ and ‘Fastest Growing 50’ Awards
Published by DP Information Network Group and co-produced
by Ernst & Young, this annual survey of companies
operating in Singapore is supported by International
Enterprise Singapore, SPRING Singapore, and The Business
Times (Singapore). In recognition of companies garnering
the highest industry growth among the largest 1000 peers
in Singapore, a subsidiary of SembCorp Marine (SembMarine),
PPL Shipyard was ranked top in the ‘Construction’
industry category. A subsidiary of SembCorp Utilities
(SembUtilities), SembCorp Power ranked top in the ‘Electricity/
Gas/ Water’ industry category. Another SembUtilities’
subsidiary, SUT Sakra received an award for being among
the ‘Fastest Growing 50 companies’ in the
same survey. This award is given to Singapore companies
with the highest compounded annual growth rate in revenue
over the previous three-year period. SUT Sakra, which
ranked 17th, is into its second year of receiving the
award.
Singapore Quality Class
This programme is administered by SPRING Singapore to
encourage companies to venture on the business excellence
quest. Four SembCorp companies achieved the Singapore
Quality Class (SQC) in July 2003. They are SembCorp
Industries (Corporate), SembCorp Environmental Management
(SembEnviro), SUT Sakra and Pacific Internet. Altogether,
18 SembCorp companies have been awarded the SQC
International Management Action Award
This award is organised by SPRING Singapore and the
Chartered Management Institute for management excellence
and vision. In recognition of its management excellence,
SembEnviro was given the International Management Action
Award.
30th Annual Report Award
The Annual Report Award Competition aims to encourage
listed companies to make full voluntary disclosures
in their annual reports. The Merit Award is given to
those companies whose annual reports have achieved a
high standard of excellence in disclosure. SembCorp
Industries won the Merit Award (formerly the Commendation
Award) under the Main Board category.
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Singapore
Environmental Reporting Awards 2003
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
Awards reward companies for excellence in environmental,
social and sustainability reporting. The aim of the
Awards is to identify and reward innovative attempts
to communicate corporate performance and transparency.
Award winners demonstrate that by emphasising completeness,
credibility and communication, companies can target
significant improvements in the quality of information
disclosed during the reporting process. SembCorp Industries
won a Commendation for Environmental Reporting in an
Annual Report
Five-Star Safety Award by the British Safety Council
This is an award by the British Safety Council (BSC),
one of the world’s leading independent workplace
safety bodies. The audit looked at systems of work,
procedures, training methods and the overall management
approach to workplace safety, health and environmental
matters. SembUtilities’ subsidiary, SembCorp Utilities
UK (formerly known as SembCorp Utilities Teesside) won
the Five-Star Health and Safety Award for workplace
safety at its Wilton International chemical park site.
National Business Awards (United Kingdom)
This series of national awards recognises innovative
application of technology in the United Kingdom. The
National Business Awards are designed to celebrate the
best in British business. SembCorp Utilities UK made
it as a finalist in the ‘Best Use of Technology’
category at the National Business Awards in London in
November 2003. SembCorp Utilities UK was singled out
for adapting the Geographical Information System technology
for innovative applications. Using aerial imagery to
map a geo-coded representation of the earth’s
geography, the company was able to apply the technology
in the safe management of a wide range of industrial
facilities at the Wilton International chemical park
site.
Innovation of the Year Award
Closer to home, Jurong Shipyard, a subsidiary of SembMarine
won the Innovation of the Year Award, organised by SPRING
Singapore. The award was given for a successful execution
of an innovative technique to skid a massive 14,000-tonne
upper hull of a semi-submersible rig over the lower
hull, a major milestone in offshore rig building.
The International Federation of Asian and Western
Pacific Contractors’
Association Award
The International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific
Contractors’ Association (IFAWPCA) gives out the
award for quality and innovative civil engineering.
SembCorp Engineers and Constructors (SembE&C) received
the Gold Award for Civil Engineering Project for the
Light Rapid Transit project.
Singapore H.E.A.L.T.H. Awards
To help employees lead healthy and vibrant lives, the
Singapore H.E.A.L.T.H. (Helping Employees Achieve Lifetime
Health) Awards are given out by the Health Promotion
Board to give national recognition to organisations
that promote workplace health. Five SembCorp companies
won awards in 2003. SUT Sakra, SMOE and SembE&C
won the Bronze Award, while SembUtilities and Sembawang
Shipyard won the Silver Award.
'Significant Contribution in helping Singapore overcome
SARS’ Commendation
In recognition of the services provided by SembCorp
Logistics (SembLog) in the nation-wide effort to combat
the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), SembLog
received commendation from the President S R Nathan
for ‘Significant Contribution in helping Singapore
overcome SARS’.
National Safety Innovation Awards
The Ministry of Manpower in Singapore has been actively
promoting creativity and innovation towards occupational
safety and health problems through Safety Innovation
Teams (formerly Safety Improvement Teams). In the Marine
industry where safety issues are crucial in the operating
environment, SembMarine received Gold and Silver Awards
at the 6th National Safety Innovation Team (SIT) Convention
for the Marine Industry held in September 2003 and the
9th National SIT Convention held in November 2003.
Annual Safety Performance Awards
Overseen by the Ministry of Manpower to assess companies
that develop good safety management systems, this has
been an important award since 1990. In the Annual Safety
Performance Awards 2003, SembE&C received a total
of nine Silver and eight Merit Awards. SembLog received
a Merit Award while SembMarine gained two Silvers and
eight Merit Awards.
National Quality Circle Convention Awards
SembE&C garnered two Gold and four Silver Awards
for innovation and a value creation culture at the National
Quality Circle Convention.
e-SCM Council of Singapore
SembLog participated in the National e-Supply Chain
Management (e-SCM) Assessment Programme sponsored by
the Singapore Government and was awarded the e-SCM certificate
by the e-SCM Council of Singapore for its robust supply
chain management processes and best-in-practices enabling
capabilities.
